Times Cited Count:19 Percentile:90.11(Geosciences, Multidisciplinary)During three winter seasons from November 2016 to March 2019, 11 gamma-ray glows were detected at a single observation site of our ground-based gamma-ray monitoring network in Kanazawa, Japan. These events are analyzed with observations of an X-band radar network, a ceilometer, a disdrometer, and a weather monitor. All the detected glows were connected to convective high-reflectivity regions of more than 35 dBZ, developed up to an altitude of 2 km. They were also accompanied by heavy precipitation of graupels. Therefore, graupels in the lower layer of thunderclouds that correspond to high-reflectivity regions can form strong electric fields producing gamma-ray glows. Also, these events are compared with a limited sample of nondetection cases, but no significant differences in meteorological conditions were found between detection and nondetection cases in the present study.

There is high expectation for advanced remote technology and robotics to reduce the radiation exposure for workers in harsh nuclear environments such as the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS). However, the radiation tolerance of state-of-the-art key components, sensors and electronic devices, for remote operation is still limited. In order to extend the application of robotics in nuclear energy, it is pertinent to develop "Radiation hardness" of components and "Radiation smartness" in operation procedures. Furthermore, developments of "Radiation measurement" and "Technology to recognize the location and to grasp the surrounding environment", including the radiation imaging of the high dose-rate fields inside the FDNPS and the detection of nuclear fuel debris, are necessary for the future nuclear fuel debris retrieval. This Fukushima Research Conference aims to share the future vision for advancing the remote technology among experts from diverse fields.

The Atomic Energy Society of Japan has planned to publish a document for public, entitled "Current and tomorrow of atomic energy, -Experiences from the accident at the Tokyo Electronic Power Company Fukushima Dai-ichi NPPs-". The documents give us basics and usages of radiations, in addition to nuclear power plants and the accident at TEPCO Fukushima Dai-ichi NPPs. This manuscript explains physical quantities (e.g., absorbed dose), protection quantities and operational quantities that are used for radiation measurement and protection. The unit of radioactivity is also explained, because radioactivity is measured for work places in a radiation facility for internal exposure protection. In addition, radiation dose constants that relate radiation dose to the activity are also introduced, as useful radiation units for radiation protection.

The charge exchange multi-turn beam injection scheme is adopted in the J-PARC 3GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron Accelerator (RCS) due to achieve 1MW beam power operation. In the conventional multi-turn beam injection scheme, which is provided by only the septum and bump magnets, injecting turn numbers are limited by the beam losses at the septum. On the other hand, charge exchange multi-turn beam injection does not cause the beam losses at the septum; there is no restriction in principle on the injecting turn number. However, high residual doses are observed around the stripper foil. During the charge exchange multi-turn beam injection, not only the injecting beam but also circulating beam hit the foil, and then a large number of secondary particles, namely protons and neutrons, are generated. PHITS simulation results indicate that the secondary particles cause the high residual doses around the foil. To verify this examination, secondary particles measurement is key issue. Then, a new independent type foil introducing device is installed in the 100-deg dump beam transport line in order to construct a simple experimental system for secondary particle measurements. We plan the two experiments by using this system; one is a directly secondary particle detecting method, and the other is a radioactivation analysis method with metal sample pieces. Now, we started the study of how the identification of species and energies of the secondary particles with PHITS code. Irradiation target of Cu is adopted and irradiated proton or neutron beam with various energy range. Then radio-nuclides emitted the -ray are picked up. Moreover, the radio-nuclides, whose reaction efficiencies due to beam species or energy are different, are searched for the indicator of the secondary particles. From the simulation results, Zn is extremely suitable for a proton beam indicator, and Co and Co are also suited for a neutron and proton indicator respectively.

In the J-PARC RCS, a large fraction of our effort has been concentrated on reducing and managing beam losses to achieve 1MW high power proton beam operation. Standard beam loss monitor (BLM), which is installed outside of the magnet in every cell of beam optics and detect the beam loss at wide area in each cell, is insufficient to investigate finer beam loss mechanism in the ring. Thus we developed new scintillation type BLM to detect the beam loss at spot area on the vacuum chamber inside the magnet. The new BLM has separating structure a photomultiplier (PMT) from a plastic scintillator and connecting with optical fibres. Because small plastic scintillator is installed on the vacuum chamber directly, it has capability to have high sensitivity for localized spot area beam loss. On the other hand, the PMT can precisely be operated without being affected by magnetic field by keeping the PMT from the magnet. The new BLM leads the RCS to achieve the stable high power beam operation. In this presentation, we report the detail of the performance of the new BLM.

The typical method used for measuring the vertical distribution of radiocesium is troublesome because it requires collection and measurement of the activity of soil samples. In this study, we established a method of estimating the vertical distribution of radiocesium by focusing on the characteristics of -ray spectra obtained via aerial radiation monitoring using an unmanned helicopter. In this method, the change in the ratio of direct rays to scattered rays at various depths in the soil was utilized to quantify the vertical distribution of radiocesium. The results show a positive correlation between the abovementioned and the actual vertical distributions of radiocesium measured in the soil samples.

After the Fukushima nuclear accident, JAEA lead off demonstration tests to find out effective decontamination methods for various school facilities in Fukushima. It included (1) dose reduction measures at schoolyards, (2) purification of swimming pool water and (3) removal of surface contamination of playground equipments. Through these tests, they established practical methods suitable for each situation; (1) At school yards, dose rates were drastically reduced by removing topsoil which was then placed in trenches of 1 m deep; (2) For the purification of pool water, the flocculation-coagulation treatment was found to be effective for collecting radiocesium dissolved in the water; (3) Demonstration tests for playground equipments, such as horizontal bars and a sandbox wood frame, suggested that effectiveness of decontamination considerably varied depending on the material, paint or coating condition. This paper reviews these demonstrations.
